With the ability to reach more people, in more places, the Internet has changed the landscape of marketing. You can enjoy making a good income on nothing more than a one page website, or web page. Affiliate Marketing, has given people the opportunity to have a home-based business, where you can earn money that rivals Network Marketing, if done correctly. What is affiliate Marketing and how can you earn a good income from it?

I like SmartPassiveIncome.com’s definition of Affiliate Marketing; Affiliate marketing is the process of earning a commission by promoting other people’s (or company’s) products. The amount of the commission depends on the ad network, if they are using one, or the company and product that you are promoting.

Like I’ve said many times, and will continue to say; it takes some education to even know where to start. In order to begin, you will need to own a web page, website or blog. The nice thing about it is, you don’t need to have your own product. You actually promote other people’s product as the definition states, but you do it on your own site.

Furthermore, you can earn a passive, residual income by getting traffic to your site. Create quality content, that stays green, and you can make money from a post or page indefinitely. Or at least as long as your site stays up. And, you don’t need to worry about any overhead, related to having to produce a product.

You may hear this referred to as monetizing your website or blog. When you are on a website and you see ads on the site, it’s because the site owner is monetizing it by advertising the client’s products to their customers. More so, the biggest and most recognizable companies in the world use affiliate marketing to promote their products and services. Amazon, Walmart and Apple are doing it, just to name a few.

When you have your own site you can sign up to be an affiliate to these companies, sometimes directly, and sometimes through an advertising network. For example, Amazon manages it’s own amazing affiliate program, where Walmart has a third-party ad network managing theirs.

Additionally, you can find different types of ad networks as well. I spoke about Google AdWords in my article, Using Google AdWords to get Leads, where you can market your business in Google’s network. On the other end of the equation, Google AdSense allows website owners, to place those ads that were produced by using AdWords, on their sites. There are also ad networks like Infolinks, where the ads are placed on people’s websites as contextual links.

There are many options that an Affiliate Marketer could use to monetize their site. You may notice that you will see more than one type of ad, for a lot of websites that you visit. This is my preferred method, but you have to go with whatever works for your site. Also, along those lines, you’ll want to stick with promoting a product or service that fits within the theme of your site. Again, you will need to learn the proper way to do affiliate marketing to be successful, as education is always the key.
