The Perception of Direct Sales

As I look around the Internet these days I’ve noticed that there are mixed feelings that people have about Direct Sales. It seems that either people are strongly for it, or would be embarrassed to even associate themselves with it. What is the cause for this and if it’s a problem, then how can it be fixed.
Good Perception
What is really comes down to is how people view the Direct Sales industry. The perception that direct sales is a great industry comes from those who understand the business model, l and who approaches it correctly. This comes from being properly educated, and having a certain skill set to begin with. There are certain personal factors when it comes to skill set that may have a positive or negative effect on it. Being ambitious and goal oriented certainly goes towards having a positive effect on your business efforts.
These are the people who are having success by doing it the right way. They are also the folks who have seen others do it correctly and know that it is possible to have success, when done the right way. They are ones who understand that by being an independent consultant, means that you are running your own business, and treat it as such.
Bad Perception
On the other side of the coin, those who see Direct Sales as the worse industry ever, may have very legitimate reasons for believing that. Now, I’ve seen some well-educated people making the claim that you should not get into Direct Sales, but why is that? Well, seeing how the industry is extremely easy to get into, anybody can do it. And there is one of the problems. When you are fed hype and don’t have any real knowledge about how to own or run a business, then you tend to have false expectations.
Furthermore, it’s like running a franchise on a smaller scale, and if you can’t see yourself running a franchise, then maybe Direct Sales is the wrong line of work for you. Not being properly equipped or educated is why many more people fail at the business, than succeed.
There’s nothing wrong with the industry. Just do a search to see what some of the financials are for the industry and you’ll see that it’s striving. However, the Pyramid or Ponzi schemes over the years have done some damage to the image of Direct Sales. Again, you can say that this is people not being informed or properly educated on what to look for when joining an opportunity. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard someone call a legitimate opportunity a scam, on the opposite token. I’ll say it here and probably many more times; in short, a pyramid scheme tries to get you to pay and sign up, but doesn’t offer a real product or service to sell.
Lastly, and I have to go here, so forgive me. It has left a bad taste for many folks, who have had to be interrupted by someone randomly pitching them on a product, that they don’t need. One of the worst but most widely used suggestions in this industry, is to try to sell your product to everyone that you know. That’s like someone who I see everyday, trying to sell me some car motor oil on a subway train. Just because you know me doesn’t mean that you should try to sell me on something that I don’t need. I don’t think I have to explain how much that puts people off, and doesn’t leave a good impression about Direct Sales in general. Learn how to market your business so you won’t have to try your best sales pitch on your mother-in-law.
To wrap it up
Admittedly, I’m a bit biased on the issue because I hate to see people make uninformed decisions about Direct Sales. More so, the major theme throughout this article has been the lack of knowledge that surrounds the industry. With the proper training, tips and information, more people would be successful in this business, and then maybe the perception would change for the better.
