It seems that you can’t mention marketing these days without mentioning social media. It’s no secret how the Internet has changed the way that we market, and that’s even more true with social media. Any kind of training or even suggestions, that you will get for marketing your business, will include using social media. Facebook is the largest social media platform, but in my experience, I would rather use Twitter to market my business.
Facebook, according to Statisticbrain.com has over 1.2 billion users. Statisticbrain.com, also states that Twitter has over 645 million active users, making it the second largest social media platform.
Does it make sense to use Facebook
According to the numbers, it would make sense to advertise with Facebook before considering Twitter. There is potentially far greater reach and a larger audience, right? The problem lies with how Facebook is used by its users, verses they way the Twitter is used.
Facebook is mainly used to keep track of, and stay in contact with friends and family. Twitter, however, is used to keep track of the latest news and happenings. Furthermore, it’s also for people who just want an outlet to be heard, or, to express themselves on the Word Wide Web.
The problem with Facebook
The majority of people just don’t go to Facebook, to see what is happening or what is being said about their favorite television show. They go to Twitter for that. It’s the same way with wanting to find the latest news, or trends in a particular niche. This may change in the future with the addition of the hash-tag, but from my point of view, the hash-tag hasn’t really taken off on Facebook as of yet.
Another issue, and a much bigger one, is that once you do get people to like your page, you have to pay for the majority of those people to see your posts. On Twitter, once someone follows you, they will see all of your Tweets.
This may not be a big deal for the large brands out there, who already have a large customer base, but for the small entrepreneur, it’s a defeating feature. If you have an established customer base, and want to stay engaged with, and form relationships with customers, then Facebook is great, and probably better than Twitter for that.
For the home based business owner, it’s just seems much easier to network with people, and to get Follows on Twitter, than you can with the same amount of work on Facebook. Additionally, you can build a nice following without spending any money on advertising. You can do that on Facebook, but it will be harder to accomplish, due to the limits that they put on Fanpages. The worse thing about it, is that charging to promote posts, doesn’t benefit anyone except for Facebook.
Conclusion
I’m not stating that creating a Fanpage is useless or a waste of time. More so, many entrepreneurs have great success with promoting their products and getting leads from Facebook. In fact, I still use it regularly and do get leads from it, but I’m just speaking from my experience, that it’s been easier on Twitter. The main thing is to diversify your prospecting efforts, and not rely simply on social media to promote yourself.
