Being an entrepreneur has its high and low’s no matter what industry you are getting started in. One of the keys to being able to get your business off the ground is being able to identify and navigate through obstacles as they come up. In Network Marketing, there are some common obstacles that most people face, partly due to the nature of the industry.
The three most common obstacles in Network Marketing are Attrition, Rejection and Naysayers. How you learn to deal with each one can determine the level of success that you can have in your business.
Dealing With Attrition
First, if you don’t know what attrition is, it basically means that someone joins and then quits your business. When you’re just starting out in your Network Marketing business, this can be devastating, if you let it get to you. When you only have five people on your team and three of them quit, then it’s easy to get discouraged.
However, it’s important to realize that attrition comes with the territory and that most of the times it’s going to be out of your control when people quit.
You have to keep going, and keep building the foundation for your business. If you are able to get those first five people signed up, then you should be able to get the next five. More so, upon scaling up your efforts you can keep building upon whatever it was that worked to get the initial sign ups.
The other important thing to take into consideration is that you have to adjust your mindset. See attrition as a challenge to overcome and use it to motivate you to find a way around it. It’s about developing that mindset for success. Not everyone is meant to succeed in their own business, especially in Network Marketing because it tends to attract people who just want dabble, and not take it serious.
The only thing that makes attrition and insurmountable obstacle is if you, yourself, actually quits.
Dealing With Rejection
In my article “Handling Rejection in Your Network Marketing Business”, I provide tips on how to handle, or deal with rejection. The reason that this topic comes up a lot when reading about Network Marketing is because you will have to deal with a lot of rejection. You can spend more energy trying to avoid it, than you would if you just faced it.
Again, if you think about how often you are told no and how it affects you in different situations, then you’ll understand that the fear when it comes to hearing no in selling, is that you are too tied to the outcome. If you worked in an appliance store and asked your customer if they wanted to purchase the extended warranty, would you be terrified of them responding with ‘no’?
Even though it may benefit them, it’s just not for everyone. But, think about why that ‘no’ would be different from hearing it in your Network Marketing business. You’re going to be successful with or without them, just like you’re going to make the sell with or without them buying the extended warranty.
With this in mind, the more “no’s” that you can get through, the more “yes’s” you will eventually arrive at.
Dealing With The Naysayers
If you’ve been in Network Marketing for any amount of time now, you know who these people are. They can be your friends, family, spouse or the guy in your Facebook group that claims Network Marketing is nothing more than a scam. There are probably as many people who don’t believe in the industry as there are that do.
More so, there are probably as many people who don’t believe in you as there are that do. The only issue with this, is if you are also one of the people who don’t believe in you. No one should be able to dictate to you whether or not you are good enough to succeed.
You can change people’s perception, by how you carry yourself, and conduct business. If you respect yourself, and carry yourself with confidence, then other people will respect you too. You are really the only person that can ever hold you back.
Again, the key to overcoming many of the obstacles that you will face comes down to having the right mindset to get through it. Training can take you so far, and is definitely needed, but the rest comes from within.
