With Network Marketing, there are certain skills that you must learn if you want to have any success within the business. Fortunately, it’s not expensive to learn the things that you need to know to grow your business.
One of the most important skills to master is how to prospect. The skills that are needed to truly be effective at prospecting are one’s that in my opinion, have to be developed, opposed to just learning a tool.
For example, you need to learn how to be patient and be a good listener. But what about some actual concrete things that you can do to help become better at prospecting?
Here’s 5 tips to help you become better:
Posture Yourself as an Expert
What does this mean? Well, first it means that you should stop trying to sell and start trying to consult. What does your prospect really want, and how can you provide a solution. Bring them value and position yourself so that they actually need you and not the other way around. This may mean changing your mindset get out of the selling mentality.
Mindset is everything, so working on it goes hand and hand with this first tip.
Find Out What They Want
This one was really mentioned as part of the first tip, but is important enough to stand out on its own. If you don’t know what your prospect really wants, then how can you offer a solution? This should be the first goal in your communication with your prospects. If you are trying to sell them something that they don’t want or need, then you’re going about it the wrong way. The only way to understand how you can help is to ask the right questions. Approach the conversation as more of an interview or consultation, than an appointment for a sales presentation.
Use a Duplicable System
With the many ways to get leads, you’ll need to focus on a method of turning them into prospects and finally converting them to team members. Developing a system will help you not only stay consistent, but should also help you become more effective. It will also help your team members with their prospecting by giving them a format, and tools to use.
If you are great at presenting, then that doesn’t help your team unless you are going to present for them everytime they get a prospect. If you refer your prospects to a video that presents your opportunity, then they can also use that video for the same effect.
Keep The Funnel Full

Most sales professionals will tell you that it’s a numbers game. To get to one yes, you may have to go through one hundred no’s. It’s the one yes, that will make all of the no’s worth it. Prospecting in Network Marketing is no different. You should never run out of people to put your business in front of. Keeping your pipeline full will ultimately get you to more people saying yes.
Follow Up With Prospects
There is power in the follow up. If a person says no to you right away, it may only mean that now is a bad time. You obviously have the person’s contact information, so don’t discard it after the initial contact. You should always follow up with a prospect. It can be via email, phone call or direct mail. Be consistent and don’t wait long enough between contacts, to let the line of communication go cold. Following up can be the difference between that person on the fence signing up with you, or going somewhere else.
When prospecting, remember that you are in the business of helping other people. You are not trying to simply sign people up. You want to sign the right people up with the right attitude and mindset. It’s those people who you are going to be able to help the most, and who are going to be able to help you.
